With the release of the new Chanel No 5 film starring French actress Audrey Tautou (star of Amelie), one cannot help but compare her to the former star of the renowned film campaign, Nicole Kidman. While Kidman starred in a dreamy, Hollywood-actress-meets-handsome-starving-artist story to the tune of Debussy's Claire de Lune, Tautou stars in a more realistic yet nostalgic portrayal of the No 5 heroine on a train to Istanbul, doing a cinematic sort of lover's tango to Billie Holiday's "I'm a Fool to want you". Both versions have that Chanelian fantasy aspect that Coco and Karl have been so good at creating all these years, but it leaves me wondering, has an American done it better?
